Jim Sharman's 1975 musical comedy horror film didn't do very much for audiences and critics alike when it was first released... UNTIL 1976, when it was shown at midnight at the old Waverly Theater on Sixth Avenue. Twice a week, audiences began to participate in the onscreen action and dialogue, and show up dressed for the occasion. In honor of this cross-dressing phenomenon and the fact that it is being shown tonight at the very same venue where WIGSTOCK got its start, HOWL Arts and Free Films in Tompkins is proud to present the Glam Rock God himself, MICHAEL T. performing his legendary rendition of "Sweet Transvestite" AND a costume contest with a $100. cash prize, sponsored by HOWL Arts. Your host for the evening is none other than that über-gothic eminence, Hattie Hathaway. Price-Waterhouse' Rikki Colon operates the absolutely famous and infallible Applause-O-Meter, and Torin Co-MC's with a vampish flair

Now that the upcoming weather forecast no longer looks like we are living in the South Pacific,

HOWL! Arts is happy to present FREE films each Thursday this summer on the green in Tompkins Square Park with live bands and performances galore!

The gates swing open at 6 PM.

The films begin at dusk.

So, bring a blanket, your lawn chair... some snack-a-roonies... and settle down for some COOL outdoor entertainment each Thursday starting June 20th.

With roots that stretch back to the famed “Black & Tan” Clubs of the Harlem Renaissance and forward to embrace the influx of disaffected GLBT street youth of color in the 70s and early 80s who found their voice in NYC Ballhouse Culture, this streetwise  oeuvre enters the 21^stCentury strong and vibrant. Mixing high fashion with the mean streets of the barrios, And Still I Rise, produced by Riki Colon, includes work by Freddie De Jesus and the legendary Cesar Valentino, the premiere voguer with the late Willy Ninja’s “House Of Ninja” The dance style made famous in the seminal film, Paris is Burning. An international cast of singers, dancers, and drag performers strut their stuff, set to a soundtrack of House and energetic urban pop music.
