GROUP READING OF ALLEN GINSBERG’S HOWL

Led and Orchestrated by poet Bob Holman, the Festival opens with a Greek Chorus of voices reading their own work that culminates with the signature reading of Howl. Opening musical act Tyler Burba singing Ginsberg songs,.. Featured poets: Hettie Jones, David Henderson, Jennifer Blowdryer, Lydia Lunch, Bob Rosenthal, Eliot Katz.., and assorted wordsmiths from the Bowery Poetry Club, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, the Poetry Project, and A Gathering of the Tribes, including: Edwin Torres, Robert Galinsky, Nikhil Melnechuk, Sarah Murphy, Rangi McNeil, Ted Dodson, Aria Boutet, Nancy Mercado, Chavisa Woods, Whitney *Witness* Greenaway, and McPhErson and more poets T.B.A.

Howl! Spotlight -Howl! Festival's Traditional Opening Night Reading of Allen Ginsberg's Poem, "Howl," in Tompkins Square Park- September 10th, 2010, 5-7PM

The 7th Annual Howl! Festival, the East Village Festival of the Arts, will begin Friday night, September 10th, 5 to 7 PM, with the festival’s traditional reading of the iconic Allen Ginsberg poem, “Howl.”  Taking place on the South Stage, (Avenue A and 7th Street), the reading will feature an amalgam of the East Village’s finest poets, including featured poets John Giorno and Anne Waldman w/ Ambrose Bye.  The reading will be led by poet Bob Holman, proprietor of The Bowery Poetry Club, founding member of Howl! Festival and East Village luminary.
Each poet will do a short reading of their original work, followed by a group reading of “Howl.” Poets scheduled to appear include: Betsy Andrews, Jennifer Blowdryer, Ana Bozicevic, Guillermo Castro, Steve Dalachinsky, Thomas Fucaloro, Greg Fuchs, Daniel Gallant, Alan Gilbert, Amy King, Mariposa, Douglas A. Martin, Angelo Nikolopoulos, Amy Ouzoonian, Meghann Plunkett, Jon Sands, Susan Scutti, Jean Ann Verlee, Michael Warr, Chavisa Woods, Advocate of Wordz, Ra Ara ya. Host and MC Bob Holman.

HOWL! EMERGENCY LIFE PROJECT (HELP)

HOWL! EMERGENCY LIFE PROJECT (HELP) OF THE ACTORS FUND

HOWL! HELP provides emergency assistance to qualified performing artists in crisis and offers other Actors Fund support services.
If you are in the arts, have made or continue to make your career in NYC's East Village, Lower East Side or downtown community and are in need of emergency assistance, get in touch and find out how HOWL! HELP can provide life-changing support. Eligible artists include participants in the annual Howl Festival and those in the East Village Arts Community in theatre, music, performance, dance, multimedia, the spoken word and visual arts. Assistance is based on need and qualifying work history.

The Actors Fund is a national human service organization that helps all professionals in performing arts and entertainment. The Fund is a safety net, providing programs and services for those who are in need, crisis or transition. HOWL! HELP eligible applicants have access to all Actor's Fund programs including HEALTH SERVICES (free Health Clinic and low-cost or free Health Insurance Resource Center), SOCIAL SERVICES (Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, HIV/AIDS, Seniors, Disabled, Women's Health, Financial Wellness and the Dancer's Resource), EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING SERVICES and HOUSING SERVICES.

Bob Holman



Bob Holman is HERE NOW and we have him as the HOST and Master of Ceremonies for the HOWL! Festival's Sept 4th, 2009 Poetry Reading in Tompkins Square Park at 6pm. Who knows lives and breathes the poetry scene of the East Village more than Bob ? Noone.
Who created a home in NYC for poetry, spoken word, musical performance etc. etc. simply by opening the doors of the Bowery Poetry Club ? Bob himself. Who is a teacher and student going out to the world in exploration of his poetry life ? Poet Bob Holman.

Bob Holman is a poet, professor, and proprietor of the Bowery Poetry Club. He is best known as a free-wheeling impresario of new poetry, appearing on MTVs Spoken Word Unplugged, HBOs "Def Poetry Jam," and producing the award-winning PBS series The United States of Poetry. He created the seminal poetry label, Mouth Almighty/Mercury, administered St Marks Poetry Project and Nuyorican Poets Caf hes dogged by the moniker of Dean of the Scene (Seventeen) and is a member of the Poetry Pantheon (NY Times) for his part in popularizing the raucous, populist poetry slams. But hes also written eight books, most recently A Couple of Ways of Doing Something, a collaboration with Chuck Close published by Aperture, teaches at NYU and Columbia, and has recently performed at the Kolkata Book Fair, Banff Arts Centre, the Costa Rican International Poetry Festival, and the Naropa Summer Writing Program. He is currently working on a documentary on the Poetry of Endangered Languages, with trailers for his trips to West Africa and Israel/Palestine on the Net at
